Restore the character of your existing parquet floor. From loose and damaged blocks to worn finishes, we assess the condition of the flooring and recommend suitable repairs, sanding and finishing options.
Parquet flooring brings warmth, character and distinctive patterns to a room. Over time, however, individual blocks can loosen, finishes can wear away and the surface may become scratched or uneven. In many cases, the floor can be assessed for repair and refinishing rather than immediately replaced.
At S Wood Floor, we work with existing parquet floors across London, considering the condition of the wooden blocks, the underlying surface and any previous repairs before recommending the next steps.
Whether the floor has been hidden beneath carpet or has simply become worn through everyday use, the appropriate treatment depends on how securely the blocks are fixed and whether there is enough sound wood available for sanding.
Parquet restoration may involve repairing individual sections, preparing the existing surface, sanding where suitable and applying a protective finish. Our approach is to retain the floor's original character while addressing the problems affecting its appearance and use.
For a broader introduction, see our guide to restoring old parquet floors.
Unlike ordinary floorboards, parquet flooring consists of individual wooden blocks arranged in a pattern. Damage to one area does not necessarily mean that the entire floor needs replacing.
Common problems include:
Loose or lifting parquet blocks.
Missing or cracked wooden pieces.
Gaps between individual blocks.
Scratches, worn finishes and surface discolouration.
Uneven sections or localised movement.
Damage caused by moisture or previous repairs.
Where suitable, loose blocks may be secured and damaged sections repaired. Missing or badly deteriorated pieces may need to be replaced with compatible timber, depending on the original dimensions, species and availability.
Older parquet floors can also have adhesive or subfloor problems that must be addressed before sanding. We assess these conditions rather than assuming that a new finish will solve the underlying issue.
For general timber repairs, see our Wood Floor Repairs service.
Once the parquet is sufficiently stable, sanding may help remove a worn surface finish, reduce suitable surface marks and prepare the wood for refinishing.
The amount of sanding possible depends on the thickness and condition of the parquet, as well as any previous sanding. Some floors may be too thin, unstable or damaged for further sanding.
Where appropriate, finishing options may include lacquer or oil, depending on the timber, the condition of the floor and the appearance required. Colour changes may also be possible, although the final result depends on the wood species and existing condition.
We use professional dust-extraction equipment to help reduce dust during sanding, but some dust may still be produced.

We look at the condition of the parquet blocks, the stability of the flooring, signs of moisture damage and the existing finish.
Loose, damaged or missing pieces are assessed so that the necessary preparation and repair work can be discussed before sanding.
The floor is prepared according to its condition. This may include suitable repairs, cleaning and other preparation before refinishing.
If the parquet is suitable for sanding, the surface can be prepared for the agreed finishing system.
We provide guidance on the selected finish, including applicable drying or curing requirements and routine maintenance.
Not every parquet floor requires every stage. The exact process depends on the condition of the existing flooring.
The cost of restoring parquet flooring depends on the condition of the existing floor and the work required.
A floor that needs sanding and refinishing may involve a different scope of work from one with loose blocks, missing sections, damaged adhesives or moisture-related problems.
The size of the area, the parquet pattern, the availability of compatible replacement timber and the selected finish can also affect the quotation.
We assess the work before confirming the appropriate treatment and price.
